Основные проблемы, связанные с кормлением поросят после отъёма от свиноматки, наиболее выражены в первую неделю после отъёма. В это время под влиянием изменяющегося кормления происходит переформатирование деятельности желудочно-кишечного тракта, поэтому стратегия питания должна быть гибкой и должна учитывать особенности организма, которые меняются каждую неделю. В послеотъёмный период основные цели такой стратегии состоят в следующем: 1) обеспечить быстрое протекание в благоприятном направлении морфологических и физиологических изменений в слизистой оболочке кишечника; 2) повысить реактивность иммунной системы до нормального уровня; 3) предупредить чрезмерный рост патогенных микроорганизмов и стимулировать рост полезной микрофлоры; 4) активировать пищеварительную функцию. Реализация каждой из названных позиций достигается путём применения различных кормовых добавок. Однако следует иметь в виду, что применение единственной кормовой добавки может повышать рост и сохранность поголовья, но в целом эффективность применения кормовых добавок не бесспорна и может проявляться лишь в определённой области условий. Отсутствие ожидаемых результатов от применения какой-либо биологически активной добавки свидетельствует не об отсутствии присущих ей свойств, а о недостаточной обоснованности её применения. Применение кормовых добавок должно быть нацелено на устранение «узких» мест в обмене веществ. Удачное определение процесса, тормозящего продуктивность, и обоснованное применение необходимого биологически активного вещества для восстановления нормальной функции лимитирующего процесса приводит к более полному функционированию всей системы. Не может быть обоснованным одновременное применение более двух или даже трёх кормовых добавок, удачное сочетание которых не суммируется, а усиливает действие одной из них. Выбор добавок должен быть направлен в первую очередь на устранение причин, вызывающих негативные последствия, а не на устранение следствий. Иногда бывает достаточно пересмотреть структуру рациона с учётом функциональных свойств ингредиентов. В последнее время развивается концепция, предусматривающая влияние на обмен веществ непосредственно в стенке кишечника. Выявлены ключевые метаболиты в энтероцитах, влияющие на использование питательных веществ, которые должны приниматься во внимание при разработке рационов.
