ABSTRACT. The subject of the study was young carps Cyprinus carpio L. subdivided into two (control and treatment) groups, 5 individual each. Experimental thermogradient setup was composed of two glass choot of 4.25 m length subdivided by half-open partitions into 11 compartments. Thermal gradient was from 19°С up to 34°С, light regime – 12:12 hours. In the course of the day, there were made 15 video observations of fishes distribution in compartments, including one made during feeding. The mean daily preferred temperature and amount of feed consumed were registered. Fishes in treatment group were injected intracerebroventriculary (ICV) by serotonin at a dose of 0.3 µg/g of body weight, those in control group – by Ringer saline for cold-blooded, pH 7.4. In the treatment group, the mean daily preferred temperature was increased by 2-3оС beginning from 5 day of the experiment. In contrast to the experiments conducted at constant temperature conditions, ICV-injection of serotonin had no inhibitory effect on fish appetite. On the contrary, carps in experimental group consumed more food than individuals in the control one. It has been suggested that this was determined by the increase in metabolism rate during being in compartments with high temperature.
