The aim of the study was to estimate statistics of biochemical tests for vitamin B1 status, and to evaluate relationships between concentrations of thiamine, pyruvate and acetaldehyde in blood and milk of dairy cows. The probes of blood and milk were obtained from 10 sets of dairy cows from various geographic regions (n=69). The concentration ratio pyruvate/thiamine in blood plasma was correlated with that in milk (r=0.33, P<0.001). The high variability was indicated for acetaldehyde in blood (СV ≥100%). Blood pyruvate did not correlate with blood acetaldehyde. On the other hand, milk thiamine correlated with milk acetaldehyde (r=0.36, P<0.001) and blood acetaldehyde (r=0.41, P<0.001). The data obtained suggest that blood contamination by acetaldehyde has not been related with pyruvate metabolism but it was caused by acetaldehyde production during microbial fermentation in rumen, with subsequent transfer into total circulation and mammary secretory cells. Acetaldehyde concentration in milk varied in the range 0.2-4.0 μg/ml. So far as acetaldehyde is a cancerogenic agent, its level in milk has to be controlled for ensuring safety of milk products.
