The object was to develop nutritional regime for growing bulls of milk breeds providing relatively high live weight gain, but allowing a moderate restriction of nutrition during growing with subsequent intensification during fattening. The trial was performed on 4 Kholmogor bulls during the age period from 1.5 up to 14.5 months; growth performance traits were compared with normative data for bulls of milk breeds. The nutritional regime so far developed includes restricted nutrition during growing period, with daily LWG ≈ 700 g, the high concentrate feeding (80% of ME) during 1.5-5.5 months with daily LWG 1100 g, the high feeding level for fattening period, with daily LWG 1200-1400 g, with total daily LWG 1100 for whole period from birth to slaughter at the age of 14-15 months at LW 450 kg with mean metabolizable energy expenditure of 50-55 MJ/kg LWG. There were indicated that restriction of nutrition invariably leads to the decrease in growth rate, but it may be partly compensated by the amelioration of feeding during fattening period. Prerequisite for the effective realization of this compensatory capacity is providing development and a more earlier functioning of the forestomachs through adaptation to large intake of the forage and concentrates with rationing crude and degradable protein and starch.
