ABSTRACT. The object was to study pH-dependence of the activity of proteinases that function in the body of potential food items of benthophagous fish, as well as associated microflora in several species of invertebrates: crustacean zooplankton (total sample), freshwater shrimp Amphipoda sp., chironomid larvae Chironomus sp., oligochaetes Oligohaeta sp. and the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Pall.) from Cuciurganreservoir. It is shown that the level of proteinase activity in homogenates of whole body of hydrobionts and associated microbiota largely depends on the pH. Maximum activity of proteinases of the whole body of studiedinvertebrates is maintained within a narrow pH range (8-9). Maximum values of proteinase activity in associated microbiota in different species of invertebrates vary over a wide range of pH (6-10). Proteinases of associatedmicrobiota in zebra mussel, zooplankton, larvae of chironomids and amphipods are functioning effectively in the zone of acidic pH values.
