Natural resistance (NR) is a complex trait which in various situations may be related with different aspects of the health status, viability, stress resistance and adaptive capacity. There are many approaches to the assessment of NR but their adequacy to the aims of study is hardly to evaluate. The paper has following sections: problems of NR identification; relationship between aging and age-dependent decrease in NR; theories of the aging; biochemical tests for NR evaluation; oxidative metabolic stress in the light of theories of Selleur and Waddington; the possible ways of the solution of practical problems. The advantage of biochemical tests for NR evaluation is discussed, including determination of the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, thyol-disulfid ratio, cholesterol of high- and low density lipoproteins ratio. The problems of decreasing viability of high producing animals are the consequence of the negative effects of one-side selection on productivity, technological stressing and the absence of the effective predictions of animal's requirements for essential nutritive factors. For significant amelioration of this situation, simultaneous eradication of the bottlenecks in these fields has to be made. The prospects in the development of the novel family of bioactive substances with complex functions are illustrated on the example of selenopyran which has the properties of antioxidant, immune stimulator, anti-stress factor and radioprotector.
