ABSTRACT. The object was to study the effect of vitamin A deficiency on morphological and functional status of endocrine (pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands) and reproductive (ovaries) systems, blood biochemical and hormonal profile in ewes aged 3-5 years. The control group (n=5) received a balanced diet, the experimental group (n=5) fed forage with a low carotene content. Vitamin A deficiency exerted negative effect on biochemical composition of blood, reduced blood concentration of estradiol and progesterone and caused marked changes in morphological and functional status of endocrine and reproductive organs. There were indicated the changes in ovary’s form and consistency (thick compared to the norm), the changes in the sizes and consistency were indicated in the uterus and cervix. In pituitary, there were indicated disintegration of cells and fine-cystic degeneration, in thyroid gland – enlarged follicules’ size, wall thinning, increased fraction of interfollicular tissue, in adrenal glands – all layers thinned with signs of degenerative changes, in ovaries – the sizes smaller than normal with a high fraction of connective tissue and a small number of follicles of all kind − primordial, growing, mature. The data obtained may be used under prophylaxis and correction of reproductive disfunctions in sheep caused by vitamin A deficiency.
