ABSTRACT. The effect of serotonin (5-HT) on the dynamics of locomotor activity and food intake in the yearlings of carp Cyprinus carpio when fed different diets in the condition of a high zinc content in water have been investigated. It is shown that the character of the influence of zinc in a concentration of 1 μmol/L, on the effects of 5-HT largely depends on the food composition of fish (food with dominating of protein or carbohydrate components). Anorectic effect of 5-HT strongly manifested in fish kept on a protein diet than carbohydrate diet; on protein diet, food consumption decreased by 53 and 46.4%, on carbohydrate diet by 26.1 and 11.9% as compared to intact fish in the absence and presence of zinc, respectively. On protein diet, a statistically significant anorectic effect of 5-HT in the presence of zinc is shown at 1 hour and 72 hours, on carbohydrate diet it was indicated just 1 hour after administration of the hormone. The fish on carbohydrate diet was more resistant to the action of 5-HT; statistically significant (P <0.05) zinc effect on 5-HT action observed only at 72 hours after hormone administration. In the period 24-72 hours after administration of 5-HT, the oscillatory mode of the changes was observed in motor responses and feed consumption, which, according to the author, is due to the effects of the interaction of hormones that control food intake in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system.
