ABSTRACT. The aim was to study the effect of temperature in the range 0-70ºC at pH 3.0 and 7.4, as well as effect of temperature 20°C at pH in the range 5-10, on characteristics of casein- and hemoglobin-lytic peptidases functioning in homogenate of chironomid larvae Chironomus sp. It has been shown that the activity of casein- and hemoglobin-lytic peptidases in homogenate of chironomid larvae, as well as the pH-dependence are similar to that in certain fish species. Optimum pH of casein-lytic peptidase of chironomid larvae corresponds to 9.0, hemoglobin-lytic – 10.0, relative activity at pH 5.0 − 48.1 and 31.8% of maximum activity, respectively. The temperature optimum of peptidase activity of chironomid larvae corresponds to 40°C. The shape of curves of the temperature dependence of two types of peptidases is different; at pH 7.4 in the temperature zone 30-50°C, casein-lytic peptidase activity is higher than hemoglobin-lytic activity; at pH 3.0, by contrast, casein-lytic peptidase activity is lower than hemoglobin-lytic activity in broad temperature range (10-70°C). The findings suggest an important role of chironomid larvae peptidases in the processes of digestion of benthophages and juvenile fish of different ecological groups.
