ABSTRACT. During the time when industrial waste water is speedily discharged, concentration of phenols in the water can reach 3800 mg/l, which worsens the sanitary condition of water and has a negative impact on aquatic organisms. The enzymatic activity of caseinlytic peptidases was evaluated in homogenates of chironomid larvae Chironomus sp. by the increase in tyrosine concentration at 20oC, pH 7.4, as a substrate, casein (10 g/L) was used prepared on Ringer's solution. Phenol and its derivatives (2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, 2-nitrophenol and 2-aminophenol) in concentrations 62.5-500 mg/L caused a significant increase in the activity of casein-lytic peptidases in chironomid larvae; 2,4-dinitrophenol at the same concentrations does not exert significant changes in the level of enzyme activity. Peptidase activity decreases as the concentration of 4-nitrophenol elevates from 62.5 to 500 mg/L. The influence of phenol and its derivatives on the processes of protein components autodegradation of chironomid larvae − potential preys of benthophage and a fry of all fish species is discussed. It is expected that in conditions of water pollution by phenols, the peptidase activity of chironomid larvae can compensate for the low activity of enzymes synthesized by the intestines of consumers.
