ABSTRACT. The effect of food composition on the dynamics of locomotor activity and food intake in common carp Cyprinus carpio were investigated. The diet enriched by carbohydrates (2.6% protein, 0.3% fat, 17% carbohydrates, 83 kcal/g of wet weight) needed shortened time for feed arrival in experimental conditions compared to diet enriched by protein (17.3% protein, 1.7% fat, 0.1% carbohydrates, 82 kcal/g of wet weight).Serotonin (10 μg/g body weight) administered peripherally reduces the rate of moving reaction as well as food intake. The effects of serotonin are largely dependent on the ratio of protein and carbohydrate in diet. Anorectic effect of serotonin is more in fish fed diet with high content of protein compared with diet enriched by carbohydrates. The data obtained extend the information about the peripheral effects of serotonin on the various characteristics of feeding behavior in carp and substantially complete the understanding of the impact of the monoamine on feeding behavior of fish. The mechanisms of this phenomenon are discussed.
