There was carried electrophoretic separation of isoenzymes of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in liver extracts of ten species of reared in captivity and wildanimals. Cluster analysis was used to assess the similarity of species and reveal group differences in the distribution of the enzyme fractions. In semi-aquatic mammals - muskrats, nutria and American mink (cluster A), there was revealed a high content of anaerobic LDH A subunits compared to terrestrial carnivorous animals - polecats and sables (family Mustelidae, cluster B), blue foxes and silver foxes (family Canidae, cluster C). Herbivorous inhabitants of taiga (moose, hare) form a separate cluster D. Omnivorous representative Canidae - raccoon dog, which runs in the nature in a winter sleep, is on the dendrogram an "intermediate" position between Mustelidae and other Canidae(blue foxes, silver foxes ). The patterns are an example of biochemical adaptation of functions to the specific conditions of life and diet of mammals.
