The object was to review the history of investigations and the present state of the art in grass ensiling in Russia. Some important problems aree examined, such as main problems in the theory ensiling, production of high quality grass silage, depending on the sugar content and degree of plants drying; main factors which control fermentation process; rational methods and parameters of grass preservation. Very efficient approach is a manufacture of silage and haylage in accordance with grass species, and it is necessary to continue the study in this direction. At the present time, there is a need of the studies into following sectors of ensiling theory: the physiological and biochemical processes during grass wilting, action of the secondary metabolites of plants and lactic acid bacteria, inhibiting the development of undesirable microflora under ensiling; research into establishing optimal conditions for the activity of plant enzymes acting as activating or inhibiting agents, combined use of bacterial and enzymatic preparations. Special attention should be devoted to study the ensiling of plant raw with high sugar content and to develop the methods of preventing the aerobic deterioration of fodders.
